Bats in the Attic: Florida's Rules, the Maternity Season, and How Exclusion Works
Bats are protected under Florida law, which means you can't trap, poison or kill them, and you can't seal them in. The only legal method is exclusion, and it can't be done during the maternity season, roughly April 15 through August 15, when flightless pups would be trapped inside.
Signs of a bat colony
Chirping and rustling at dusk, a sharp ammonia smell, dark staining below a gap in the eaves, and droppings (guano) that crumble to dust and glitter with insect parts.
How bat exclusion works
- Inspection at dusk to watch the exit points.
- Seal every secondary gap along the roofline.
- Install one-way bat valves on the main exits. Bats leave to feed and can't get back in.
- After several nights, remove the valves and seal permanently.
- Guano cleanup and sanitation.
