Raccoon in the Attic? Here's What Happens Next (And Why You Shouldn't DIY It)
A raccoon in the attic is loud, messy and, in spring, usually a mother with kits. The wrong move (sealing the hole while she's out, or trapping her and leaving the babies) makes it worse. Here's the right sequence.
How they get in
Raccoons pull apart soffit panels, roof returns and gable vents. A weak spot becomes a doorway in one night.
Is there a litter?
February through July, assume yes. Chattering, chirping sounds during the day are kits. A mother separated from her kits will tear through a roof to get back to them.
Professional raccoon removal, step by step
- Inspection to find every entry point and confirm whether there are babies.
- Humane trapping, or hand removal of kits so the mother can be relocated with them.
- Exclusion: repairing and reinforcing the entry so it can't be reopened.
- Attic cleanup: raccoon latrines carry roundworm; contaminated insulation is removed and replaced.
